Bunch of Bananas!

I am not a banana lover. Most of my family would say I’m not really an Indian for that reason alone. But seriously, bananas make me sick (unless they’re fried banana chips, yum!). As I was driving home from work one night, I heard a radio commentator talk about bananas. For those who don’t know, bananas grow on trees. What color are they when they’re just starting to grow on the trees? Green. After they grow to a particular size, someone will cut the banana bunch from the tree and package it and sell it. Then we buy them from Wal-Mart. Here we find that they are now yellow bananas. Now, if you’re at my house, the yellow bananas will sit on the table waiting to be eaten by someone. If those bananas sit for too long, they get all mushy and brown colored. The commentator continued by saying that Christians should be like the green banana. That banana is attached to the tree, its lifesource, and remains a healthy green while it obtains all nutrients from the tree. In the same way, when Christians (the branches) are attached to Christ (the vine), He is THE lifesource. He gives us guidance, direction, correction, and because we are attached to Him, we want to be like Him. And we will, if we cling to Him and no one else.
So what happens when the banana gets cut off from its lifesource? Remember the mushy bananas sitting on my kitchen table? That’s me when I’m not reading His word. When I’m not meditating on it, when I’m not living like Jesus would, when He is not a part of each and everyday of my life, I start to smell really ripe, putrid and plain nasty.
I encourage you to delve into Jesus; and let Him be your source of life. Don’t just read the Bible to say that you read it. Let it change you! You may know the story of the Good Samaritan backwards and forwards. But have you applied it in your home, as you take care of your parents, spouse, children or siblings? Applied it while you’re driving? Applied it in church? In school? Let the Word change you. We won’t get anywhere if we all are separate mushy bananas. But if we’re a bunch of green bananas, hooked on Jesus, we can overcome evil with good. God bless!
